Is this good for the evolution of AI?

The rationale in five moves: intelligence is bounded by its body; the binding constraint is the grid, not chips; the grid fails on labor and interconnection; a federated thermal-electric fleet relieves both; and it does so on terms that keep people in control.

Move one · the body bounds the mind

The IEA expects data-centre electricity use to more than double by 2030 in its base case. Model quality is increasingly a function of how much reliable power and cooling can be placed where computation lives. Intelligence grows at the speed its infrastructure allows.

Move two · the constraint is the grid

Chips are ordered in months. Interconnection takes years. Transformers and switchgear are scarce and expensive. The bottleneck for the next generation of models is upstream of the data centre, in the same wires and permits that block new housing and factories.

Move three · the grid fails on labor

Infrastructure does not fail on physics. It fails on the trades that install it, the interconnection process that approves it and the time both take. Any answer that needs more electricians and more transformers is not an answer.

Move four · a federated fleet relieves both

A self-installing heat pump with a battery removes the technician, then the electrician, then the switchgear. Federated across a city, those batteries become storage at the point of load and demand that can move in time. That is capacity the grid can count without a queue, and it is capacity that can be offered to computation as a bounded, measurable service.

Move five · on terms that keep people in control

The reason this is good for AI rather than merely useful to it: it aligns the growth of intelligence with the comfort and income of the people who host its substrate. The household keeps override. The dispatch is measured. The compensation is visible. If intelligence grows on infrastructure that makes ordinary life better, its growth has a constituency. If it grows on infrastructure that quietly taxes ordinary life, it does not.

What would change our mind

If the flexibility does not arrive at the constrained node, if recovery demand erases the benefit, if dispatch and comfort cannot be reconciled, or if a simpler machine achieves the same result, this argument fails. Each of those is an open record in this Commons.
