Time is a resource in the thermal system
A building can move part of its heating or cooling demand through time. Thermal flexibility and electrical export are different capabilities, and a node with a battery has both.
Heat, electricity and time
DOE describes thermal energy storage as saving heat or cooling for later use. In an appropriate building, storage and controls can move some thermal demand away from a constrained period. That capability depends on equipment, weather and the permitted comfort range.
Two kinds of flexibility
A thermal kilowatt-hour is not an electrical kilowatt-hour. Pre-cooling a room shifts when a compressor runs; a battery shifts when electricity is drawn from the grid, and can, with the right interface and approval, push it back. An Airform node has both, and the Commons insists they be described separately: thermal capacity, electrical power, storage losses and the permitted grid interface.
What belongs in the field record
Interval electrical demand, equipment operation, indoor conditions, outside weather, dispatch requests and occupant overrides. The experiment should compare like conditions and account for demand returning after an event. Its output should be an independently understandable record, including periods when the system could not help.
